Review : The Hard Way by Katie Ashley

I do love a book that will bring out a range of emotions in me, and I was pretty happy when I was gifted The Hard Way by Katie Ashley, because it did just that.

Cade Hall is one of those boys, you know the type, self-assured, egotistical and just generally a right a*#@hole. Born into an influential family he never wanted for anything. All that comes crashing down around him when he screws up badly, leaving him to participate in community service to preserve his position on his college football team.

Avery Prescott was once an innocent girl who misguidedly placed her trust in Cade during high school, only to have him destroy her. When Cade is ordered to do his community service at the ‘at risk’ center run by Avery, he comes to realize it’s not going to be an easy ride for him. Avery - after all the years that have passed, now finds herself with all the control, and his future in her hands.

This story is a kind of an, opposites attract romance, that I felt deals with the divide that happens when two people from opposite sides of society connect. For Cade, the reality of the lifestyles some of the people he meets whilst doing his community service is a hard pill to swallow. For Avery though, this is something she can relate to because she was raised by a single mother.

I really enjoyed the switching between the past and the present and the way it flowed, making it an easy read. It gave you an insight into their history, and the circumstances that lead to Avery becoming the strong willed person she is.

This is a book that will keep you entertained, with its complex characters, and defined writing style. The references to the 80’s was the icing on the cake for me, making the story an awesome read, and one that I would be happy to recommend.

This is a four star read for me.
